Boarding the boat from Islesford Dock.
Every summer, our family makes its way to Northeast Harbor, Maine. Nestled on Mount Desert Island, it’s one of the few spots on the U.S. East Coast where mountains rise straight from the sea. Much of our time is spent hiking, boating on Somes Sound—the only fjord in North America—and savoring the simple joys of coastal life.
A Classic Maine Welcome
No trip to Maine is complete without a lobster shack dinner by the harbor. For us, the best places are Islesford Dock on Cranberry Island, Thurston’s, and Beal’s—each serving fresh-caught lobster with sweeping harbor views. It’s the perfect way to taste Maine and watch the boats bring in the day’s catch.

Thuya Garden Tranquility
One of our favorite outings begins with a stroll through Thuya Gardens, where zinnias and Queen Anne’s lace bloom like a painter’s palette. From there, we follow the shady path past Little Long Pond, ending at Jordan Pond House for their famous popovers and lemonade.

Favorite Hikes on Mount Desert Island
On the southeastern side of the island, we love exploring Acadia’s trails. This year we hiked the Perpendicular Trail up Mansell Mountain with our longtime friends, the Reynolds family. The climb rewarded us with panoramic views, followed by a refreshing swim in Long Pond—the perfect Maine combination of exertion and reward.

Boat Picnic on the Maine Coast
A perfect Maine day means cruising across the blue sea to an uninhabited island. We explore the coastline, then settle on a flat rock for a picnic surrounded by nothing but sea breeze and seabirds. Silence feels natural when you’re with like minds.

Seaside Suppers & Family Traditions
For the Lilley and Reynolds families, no trip is complete without a shared meal. Meals together mean long conversations and laughter.

A Perfect Ending
Each summer, Maine reminds us of what matters most: family, nature, good food, and time together. From hiking trails to lobster shacks, and boat rides to seaside suppers, these memories linger like salt air on our clothes — until next summer.
